Police investigating after commuter tries to force open door of moving MRT train
SMRT is also assisting the police with their investigations.
SINGAPORE: Transport operator SMRT is assisting the police with investigations after a commuter attempted to pry open a train door on Wednesday (Nov 29).
In response to CNA's queries on Saturday, SMRT Trains president Lam Sheau Kai acknowledged there are "several videos circulating on social media showing the same commuter attempting to pry open a train door".
The police also confirmed on Saturday that a report was lodged and investigations are ongoing.
On the incident, Mr Lam said SMRT station staff were alerted at about 1pm on Wednesday to "a male commuter who was in a dress deliberately trying to force open the train door while a train was about to move off".
"This action endangers the safety of the commuter as well as others on the train," he added.
In one of the videos, another man tried to intervene after the commuter managed to open the train door slightly while the MRT train was in motion.
Pictures circulating on social media subsequently showed the commuter lying on the station platform floor, with Public Transport Security Command (TransCom) officers in close attendance. CNA understands that the platform was at Ang Mo Kio station.
Mr Lam said its station staff entered the train to investigate the matter, but the commuter was "uncooperative and turned aggressive".
He added that the commuter also resisted attempts by station staff when advised to leave the train so that other commuters could continue with their journeys.
"We take a very serious view of such behaviours and TransCom was activated and arrived on site. We are assisting the police in their investigations."
A separate video, also shared widely on social media platforms such as TikTok, the person is seen standing inside a train cabin near the doors.
As the train prepares to depart, the person moves to forcefully hold onto and pull on one of the doors, preventing them from closing. A beep can be heard in the train cabin as the doors open again, before the video ends abruptly.
